What is your favorite Christmas Tradition?

1. Memory Basket : One of our favorite Christmas traditions is our “memory basket”, we hang the basket with the decorations and place a stack of 3/5 cards and pens nearby.  As family members recall a special memory from the past year, they jot it down and throw it in the basket. All the memories are read aloud Christmas morning around the breakfast table.

2. The Night before Christmas: Silly, but very dear- all of us kids (old and young) sleep in the same room, amidst a giant pile of blankets on the floor. Simple, but makes Christmas Eve extra special (especially for the little ones).

What are some traditions you have enjoyed? Care to share?

Hi, Christa, one of my family’s favorite traditions is having my mom play some Christmas carols on the piano at home with nearly all the lights out except the lights on the Christmas tree, and we all sing together as a family for an hour or so. Merry Christmas!

The memory basket sounds like a wonderful idea!

We started a tradition when our son was born that we’ve kept ever since. He showed a very obvious love of bright, sparkly lights even as a newborn, so we would bundle him up warmly, hop into our car during the Christmas holidays, and spend the evening driving around the neighborhood and looking at all the decorated houses while we listened to traditional carols on the radio. This has since expanded to taking journeys to the various free-admission city light displays in the area. After my husband and I came to know Christ as our Lord and Savior, we took advantage of the driving time and the season to discuss the wonder and joy of His birth and life and atoning death and resurrection with our son. The lights and festivities put us in a great mood to discuss the majesty of God and events in His Word. And best of all, this carries over to the rest of the year!

And now that we have a little girl whose first birthday is coming up this 19th (YIPPEE!!!) we have even more reason to continue this holiday ritual!

Merry Christmas to your wonderful family, from your Sister and Brother in Texas! :-)

We always watch It’s a Wonderful Life somewhere around Christmas, and on Christmas Eve my dad always reads the christmas story. (Usually while we sit around the fire drinking eggnog or hot tea). Simple, but very special. :o )

My brother and I do the same thing- sleeping in the same room on Christmas Eve. Usually it’s my room, because I have a trundle bed. We watch a Christmas movie or two until we fall asleep. My sister is ALWAYS the one to get the stockings first, but we’re usually down there pretty early as well. Then we have to wait to open presents.
My brother, Dad, and I (sometimes my sister) all throw catfood on the roof on Christmas Eve so the reindeer don’t go hungry. :D
And I also love that Mom and Dad would always put presents that were from both Santa AND Jesus under the Christmas tree. I always loved that!!

My 5 sibs and I do the same thing! I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I have to leave them someday. :-)

We usually go to the Christmas Eve service held in our tiny town (in an amazing 150 year old church), then my cousins come over and we act out the Christmas story. So fun!

we watch home videos of past christmases and the plays we put on as kids….boy they are hysterical and then we usually do another play.(on any christmas book or the christmas story) even if not everybody likes it, the next couple years you have another video to watch which is very comical…(we do it very informal with a narrator so no one has to memorize lines except for a few key ones….)

i also love to watch holiday inn and white christmas…. and we usually play a hockey game:)

Oh–very sweet! I love the family picture. ;-) In our family, we always open one present–pajamas–on Christmas Eve. Then, on Christmas morning, the excited and early-rising little ones (that used to be me!) can open their stockings before everyone is up, but must wait for everyone else to get up in order to open the rest of their presents.
And, for breakfast on Christmas morning we always have canned peaches, cinnamon rolls, and breakfast casserole (eggs, potatoes, bacon, etc.). Of course, that’s just a smidgen of our traditions, but it’s getting me excited for Thursday/Friday just writing about it! ;-)

I have a strange mother… One year she decided to make her own cinnamon rolls using crescent rolls and rolled them in the shape of a baby’s diaper. She calls it our “Dirty Diaper Breakfast” and we only have them on Christmas Eve morning. I don’t know why we still do it, but we’ve done it for over 10 years now. They’re really good once you get over the “gross” factor! :)
