Ban the Streakers

Published by Christa Taylor at 6:33 am under Modesty

Can someone please explain to me this common oddity? Why is it, whenever people want attention, they take their clothes off?

You can imagine my surprise and embarassment after witnessing 2 undressed models during a “get out the vote” campaign. What does an uncovered woman (and man in this case) have to do with voting? Am I missing something?

I find it indecent that girls undress, whether it’s the top-less country singer in Central Park or tennis star Serena Williams, just to make a point. When a woman shows no modesty, she is not demeaning merely her own body, but mine as well.

With all the naked celebrities and magazine covers lying around, you’d think the general public would have gotten bored by now.

If you want Attention try some of the alternate methods below: (yes, they actually work- slightly tongue in cheek)

DO:

- Practice your Public Speaking. This is to aid you in a rally, or press conference

- Google “How to write a press release”

- Activate your Social Media outlets- Facebook,Twitter, Myspace, Blogs

- Find a cause actually worth getting behind. “Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus” is not a worthy cause. (true story)

- Sponsor House parties, explaining and supporting your event or mission.

    Great alternatives, Christa.
Reminds me of while we were in England. A performer stripped down to his orange underwear in front of a crowd of people. He had been joking about it for two minutes but our family hadn’t thought he was serious.
For some reason, most of the people enjoyed it. My family and I left immediately and there were a few more streams of families with young children who were scrambling to get away.
Here’s a suggestion: Get a decent act and more people will be interested in watching you perform instead of watching you grasp at straws for greater attendance.
    Weirdness…

It’s such a shame that streaking is now part of the voting cause. I was VERY involved in ‘Rock the Vote’ in my teens and all through my twenties. Rock the Vote being an organization dedicated to getting young people registered and to the poles. And here’s the most beautiful part about the organization (to me anyway), REGARDLESS OF POLITICAL LEANING. See we don’t care if you’re Conservative, Liberal or Moderate, we want young people voting and involved in their own government.

Streakers need not apply, you won’t be all that helpful, in act, you’d most likely hurt instead. If you want to help, keep your clothes on and become a volunteer. See nakedness is distracting going door to door. For one you’ll be far too cold to concentrate and two, your naked feet will get all cut up on the pavement. See in addition to the degradingness (if that’s even a word) I like to point out the inpracticalities of it all.

Now that I’m in my thirties, I’ve segued into volunteering at the poles on election day and volunteering at local college and high school campuses to register voters. Look at all the wonderful ways that one can volunteer to help the voting process… and still keep one’s clothes on!

Good points! I see girls at school dress in less for attention…they say so. I see it as rather sad, plus embarrassing, that they believe that’s the most effective way to get “good” attention. :?

THANK YOU CHRISTA!! Honestly, though, how sad… this should be a “DUH!” issue, shouldn’t it??

Thank you for your insights. I recently read an article from author and Pastor John Piper on the issue of nudity and clothing, and think it adds to your argument: http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/TasteAndSee/ByDate/2008/2737_The_Rebellion_of_Nudity_and_the_Meaning_of_Clothing.

When people go to such drastic measures for attention, it makes one wonder whether or not they really have anything to say that is worth our attention. I would venture to say that the answer is “no.” I would like to see stiffer penalties for public nudity…..

They’re giving women a bad name. It’s disgusting, demeaning, and it needs to stop.

It’s a tough, sad place to be when as a woman you honestly feel like your only worth is in how you look. I don’t think we can be quick to judge others when they stumble in this area, but it should not be a socially acceptable thing to see a half-dressed (or completely undressed!) woman walking around in public or plastered on a magazine cover.

Ditto on all of it… but the PNW tree octopus IS REALLY COOL. I might go to lengths to protect it myself, if it was in trouble. =D

My boyfriend was waking down the street during election season and saw a girl with nothing on but a couple stickers. True story. Personally I find it disturbing. But, sex does sell. Unfortunately.

  11. It would be more beneficial and God glorifying to direct your readers to that which is uplifting and edifying. This would be true modesty, both of the heart and of the mind. Women do not need to hear about the latest stripper or the nude celebrity photos.
“Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8
